Food Review: The ABC Juice of the JHC Canteen

Food Review: Apple-Beetroot-Carrot-Ginger Juice
The Apple-Beetroot-Carrot-Ginger Juice, commonly known as the ABC Juice, is one of the healthiest juices available in the Jai Hind College Canteen. The juice is freshly prepared right before the customer and is served in a disposable plastic glass. As far as presentation goes, the chef adopts a minimalist approach as no fancy garnishing is seen.

The juice has a deep crimson shade, thanks to the beetroot. A serving of this juice is approximately 250 ml, which is quite decent. This juice goes well with a bowl of Un-junk Bhel which is quite popular among fitness enthusiasts. The procedure for preparing this juice is anything but complex. All one needs is a blender and the ingredients for a glassful of ABC goodness.

The ABC juice, just like all other juices, is served cold. Hence, there’s no aroma that hits you before the first sip. As far as the consistency of the juice is concerned, it is thick and pulpy. The vegetables in the juice form a pulp which stays suspended in the watery medium. The juice, quite unexpectedly, has a sharp taste and a strong aftertaste. The sweetness of the apples doesn’t really come to the forefront as it is masked by the blandness of carrots and beetroots. The ginger is what gives flavor to this drink. The intense, sharp and somewhat spicy taste of ginger gives this drink a strong character, which makes a person either love it or absolutely loathe it. No added sugar makes this juice a healthier option, but the taste is compromised.  I think that this juice is near-perfect, but there happens to be one ingredient that I believe possesses the ability to take this drink to the next level: honey. About two spoons of honey would help this juice appeal to a larger number of people. A tad bit of sweetness is what this juice lacks, and honey would fix that issue better than any other ingredient. Also, fitness fanatics wouldn’t have a problem with honey. Another good addition to this recipe could be mint leaves, which would add a whole new dimension to the classic ABC.

Apart from being a refreshing drink, the ABC juice has numerous health benefits. The antioxidants and flavonoids in apples help reduce the risk of cancer, hypertension, diabetes and heart disorders. The fruit is also rich in iron, which is good for blood. Beets are rich in vitamin C and a number of important minerals like potassium and manganese, which ensure proper functioning of the organ systems. Carrots are high in vitamin A, which is important for good eyesight.

The ABC juice served in the Jai Hind canteen sticks to the conventional recipe, bringing nothing new to the table apart from the use of ginger. The pulpy and excessively fibrous texture, combined with the overall bland flavor of the juice might be one of the factors that puts so many people off. A little more experimentation with flavors is what this juice needs. In addition to that, the use of ginger could be made optional to suit the customer’s taste.

The final verdict on the ABC is that this juice, if not the tastiest, is still one of the healthiest and most refreshing drinks available in the Jai Hind Canteen. It has immense potential to go the extra mile and create mass appeal, which is essential for its survival as the juice seems to be on its way out of the canteen menu.
