‘We are so much more than we dream of’ ; we are all the ‘Little’ women'
- Aditi Sawant
The concept or the multi-faceted word - 'Young Adult' refers to a period that is one of the most explorative and unpredictable times of an individual’s life. There is so much to say , learn and imagine that if one tries to convey it to the other ‘adult’ world they may be misunderstood or be left non-comprehended by the other 'Adult' world. To willfully test and prove themselves at each and every step of the way, they find ways which shall abide by their set rules and regulations. The world of Young Adult Fiction is such, but in the process of it being fiction it leaves back traces of experienced reality.
According to me , uniqueness stands for the ability to relate to something over a longer period of time. Yes, relatability has his own pros and cons but one such novel will which stood as unique/relatable to me is (drumroll) … Little Women.
The title of the novel written by Lousia May Alcott talks about the perils and adventures and the risk of being a young, voiced woman. It talks loudly and unabashedly about the strength of womanhood, the values the institution carries and what circumstances women underwent if they decided to voice their opinions, write a book or tried to make a place for themselves. It talks about young love and the need to understand its intensity with growing age. It’s a text depicting growth and development. It shows the life of these four women belonging to the March family – Joe, Meg, Beth and Amy. Women belonging to the 18th and 19th century struggled to get recognized by the world which was almost or rather wholly made of men . A voice to be heard by all. An Identity waiting to get fame and be respected by all. The novel talks about the journey of these supposed – ‘Little’ women who are not just made for love but also to showcase their abilities and capabilities, their talents and audacities. It’s a celebration of the self over the societal rules. It’s a celebration of wishes and desires, especially to be seen and heard.
It's unique as it still applies to date, especially for most of us Indian girls, if I have to put this in perspective. We are fighting our own battles everyday and we are seeing the results of it - that we are being represented, understood by each other and also by the whole world globally. We not only have hearts to love, give and care but we also have brains, which think, articulate and invent; which discover and understand things and ways in which no one can. We are indeed ‘Little’ women somewhere who are all striving to get to our supposed goals proudly.
